Aftermath of the Pandemic: Human Resiliency and Redesigning a Better Life

Apr 27, 2022 | News & Media, Newsletters

A common saying in investing is that “Past performance does not guarantee future results.” In life, however, we often study the past to give us insight into the future. In the last two years, the Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the world and our lives. But how is it different than the past pandemics? And what can we learn from this experience to better our future?

In this article, we share one video to examine the human responses to the Spanish Flu of the early 1900s and how it resembles those of the modern pandemic. In addition, we want to share a framework to set our intentionality to design a better post-pandemic life for ourselves and our families.

Resilience throughout Pandemics: 1918 Spanish Flu and COVID-19

“Unprecedented” has been one of the buzzwords during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a conversation between Apollo Lupescu, VP of Dimensional Fund Advisors, and Linda Cao, President of Silver Oak Wealth Advisors, we discussed the parallels between the 1918 Spanish flu and our recent pandemic experience. Though the world has changed and evolved in the past century, much of the response to the disease and human resiliency has remained the same. Redesign a Better Post-Pandemic Life

Redesigning our lives is a process we can practice week by week, day by day, and moment by moment. This practice – aimed at helping us live the lives we most desire – requires not only adaptability, but also constant self-reflection.

As we look back over the past two years of the pandemic, we were all forced to adapt in one way or another to dramatic life changes. Commuting was replaced by remote work, connecting with family and friends only by phone or zoom, and other routines were often changed or upended altogether. In our most recent Women’s Circle gathering, Linda led participants through the reflective practice of redesigning a better post-pandemic life. Below is the framework to evaluate these changes, which can shed the light on how we want to move forward.
